Hedwig Kruse-Geibel. A print artist lives her dream

Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt - Friedensplatz 1, 64283 Darmstadt

For the first time, the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt is presenting the expressive works on paper by Hedwig Kruse-Geibel (Frankfurt/Main 1895-1991 Darmstadt). Her works revolve around her role as an artist, adored one, lover, mother or abandoned wife. Removed from her time and at the same time far ahead of it, she created a crossover of cultures, combining ancient mythology, Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism and Islam. Her immensely dense paintings depict fantastic creatures, figures from mysticism and fairy tales. They live from the line and bright colors.

The daughter of the Frankfurt painter Hermann Kruse, she studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Munich. In 1917, she began a promising career as a printmaker with independent works. This artistic path was abruptly interrupted in 1935 when the National Socialists banned her from exhibiting her work. Even though Hedwig Kruse, who married the sculptor Hermann Geibel (1889-1972) in 1939, continued to work artistically after 1945, the caesura caused by the Second World War remained insurmountable for her. Throughout her life, her graphic work did not receive the art-historical recognition it deserved.

Thanks to a donation by the artist‘s son, Stephan Heise (1928-2017), the Hessisches Landesmuseum Darmstadt now owns the entire graphic estate of Hedwig Kruse-Geibel. In addition to elaborate collages made of glossy paper, the oeuvre primarily comprises color woodcuts. The artist printed these from delicately cut wooden blocks with the finest lines. The graphic works are of the highest quality and technical perfection.

The exhibition presents the autobiographically colored dream worlds of the artist Hedwig Kruse-Geibel and reminds us of an almost forgotten artist.
