A one-hour guided tour of the Messel Pit.

Learn about what was once Europe‘s most modern oil shale plant, how a volcano created its crater lake, where algae sludge formed, giving rise to the oil shale that has preserved the flora and fauna from 47 million years ago to the present day. Touch the oil shale and, as you look at the fossils, imagine what it was like when the Eocene epoch began. A pre-registration is recommended.
